What thermal paste should I use when reapplying it to my CPU unit?

I used HY710 thermal grease but everytime I try to run my Xbox, it's shuts off in anywhere to a minutes to an hour depending on how I apply it. At first I thought I was doing it wrong, but it keeps not wanting to run. I think I'm not supposed to use this brand or kind, is there something wrong with it?

Honestly if you're buying something marketed as CPU thermal paste it's probably fine. You're either doing it wrong or there's another problem lingering in the background causing the overheat in the first place.

For what it's worth, I use Arctic Silver 5 . Remember to just add a pea size amount of the center of the chip and let the compression of the heat sync spread it (no need to spread it by hand before because you will probably end up adding too much).

Edit - I looked up your HY710 and it appears you have to spread it. So, shows what i know.....

That said, I would go with arctic silver or any other tube of conductive thermal paste and do it that way. Less chance of over application and seepage onto the board or under the chip.

To BrockThunderjam:

I don't know how many times I've tried applying the paste to it. It always worked perfectly fine before I took it apart.

But the other day I decided to throughly clean it since it was pretty dirty. So I took the heat sink off and a ton of dust and dirt in there, and my previous paste that came with the console was dried out and in pieces, hardly doing its job. (Which explains why it wasn't running like it used to, I've ran it for a long time for several hours a day since I've about gotten it)

I've tried different amounts, applying it pea sized head in middle, x method, line, spreading. Nothing works. Although some let it run for and hour and. A half before shutting off. Others don't even last a minute. I thought I was doing it wrong, but did lots of tutorials and stuff and found out there's nothing wrong with the way I was doing it.

My problem is that the thermal paste I have now is a bit heavier duty and is meant for things like amplifyer heat sinks and thighs like that, not tiny cnonsole cpus. So far, I believe my best bet is to ditch the HY710 and go for some good arctic silver.

Shows what I get for trying to be cheap,

To jligg:

I didn't get any with the console, I bought it used about 5-6 years ago from eBay. And I thought I had a hardware issue, but I have no clue what could cause it over heating like that, except CPU.

Let me explain, before I never had overheating like this problems until I took the console apart and forgot to reapply the thermal paste. (extremely tired that night) after I put it back together and ran it without the paste, it ran for about 2-3 minute s before overheating. Then realized I forgot the paste. I doubt it's anything but the paste problem, because I've set it up to as soon as it shuts off to prevent damage, I unplug it (to reduce chance of electrical shock) and take it apart in about 30 seconds or quicker (I've gotten the plastic case of and ran it that time without putting screws in for quicker disassembly) and felt the heat sink, it was freezing cold, but after I removed the heat sink and felt the CPU, it was warm.

So my fan is doing its job, and heatsink is there, but the thermal paste isn't conducting the heat like it should, I believe I bought a paste that doesn't work for the console. I think I need arctic silver which is meant for this type of CPU.

Another thing, I've done some more research, and could it be that I'm over tightening the screws? And do I need to leave on the x clamp, remove it, what should I do with that? And should I replace the screws with bolts and washers like I hear many poeple do? Could my problem be there?

What motherboard do you have? It could simply be that you need a reflow/reball. The solder under the chips is sh*t and there's a reason people pay to get reflows and reballs done, they work. I would looke up nofeloniesyet on here. He's a good dude and does great work.

appreciate it maN,but this late in the game it makes more sense to just replace the console.price wise anyhow.

Id rather try to repair it, there's stuff on it I'd like to keep. I don't think it needs any reball. It worked fine and i think my problem is just the paste, I'd like to know what kind I need. If I buy the right and best stuff and it still doesn't work, then I'll just get an Xbox one or something, or transfer data. If it's outrageous price for the reball in comparison to the cost of a new, I'd just upgrade if I'm gonna buy a new console.

Can you rgh or jtag tag a Xbox one?

no mods for xbox one no,sorry. kind of hard to mess up thermal paste tbh,it most likley has an issue that needs correction with reflow or reball.

For instance when you ran it without thermal paste. You could have damaged it. Get one of the paste we recommended and give it a shot

you said its a corona mobo,is it a 4gb by chance? if so a dying emmc nand chip can cause these things to do all kinda funky crap too.
How can I tell if my Emma nand chip is dying?
