Which DVD-ROM drive to buy for creating backups

First,

Let me start by saying that I have spent some time reading in the various forums but I did not find the answer for my question. So if it is answered out there, I apologize and hope you can help me. I want to buy a DVD-ROM drive so that I can read my original discs and create the backups. From the list of possible drives in Caster's sticky note I see several options, but the two that I am considering are the SH-D162C and the SH-D163A. It's my understanding that the SH-D162C has an IDE interface while the SH-D163A has a SATA interface. I have both types of connections in my PC today, but I am looking to make some upgrades to replace the MB and hard drives to use SATA and was wondering if I could also do this for the DVD drives. Particularly, I am trying to take advantage of the hot swap method to get the 360 DVD drive in mode B. By the way, has anyone been able to do this successfully ? Any help is greatly apreciated.

The purpose of the drive is to create backups. You flash it with a custom firmware that will read and unlock the disc.

Caster, if I buy that SH-D162C can I use by itself to read and burn. Would it read/make an image of the disc then ask me to put in a DVD DL to burn?

Ok. So I flash that with Kreon FW but I still need a DL burner? I saw some LiteOn DL burners at Staples pretty cheap, any idea if that'd work? I don't mind burning at slow speeds, I'm patient as long as I know it'll work.

so the SH-D162C is still the best option for reading?
Yes. As for your question about the LiteOn drive .. I have two of them, a 160PS6 and a 1633S , they both work fine for making Xbox 360 backups.

Do you recommend any certain website that carries the SH-D162C? I put an order in at Vesalia but I haven't paid because they aren't processing orders until tomorrow, the 6th, but I'm not sure if I want it from there or not. I'm not much for ordering from other countries. It'd be great if there was an alternative to the SH-D162C.

There is an alternative, the TS-H352C is another IDE option, SH-D163A and TS-H353A are the SATA options. Don't waste too much time deciding, just get one!

As for DVD-DL burners, most work so just get one that people have used and confirm work. My ASUS drive turned out to be exactly the same as a Pioneer DVR-111D so I flashed it's firmware to that of the Pioneer, and even though you can't manually change the BitSetting to DVD-ROM (as it is stated as required everywhere), it works perfectly. This is a good cheap drive. Again, not worth thinking about too much, just get one and do it, NOW!

or not, I dont care.

haha, thanks for the post. i already bought the Pioneer because Caster seems to like it. i'm just having a problem finding the best deal on the SH-D162C. i hate the EUR and having to convert everything on xe.com and trying to see how much i am actually paying. also the TS-H352C was said to be "hard to find" so i haven't looked for it. the SH-D162C isn't expensive at all like i thought it would be, a meer $24 i think. what do you have as the dvd-rom? where did you get it?
