when you installed your x3/x2.6 did you insulate the alt 5v pin unless your using a 1.6 or 1.6b

i didn't bother because the guide i used never said to do it and i can't be bothered

yep i didnt either when i got my chip the guide didnt have that little bit added.....but i dont even see how the hell ppl could short the thing out.....you would have to put the chip in real bad....like laying on the damn mobo thats just common sense....and no moving it around does not cause it to touch the mobo either.....ive moved mine plenty of times and carry it in a laptop case and throw it around all the time

ya u can just use tape....but in the tut it looks like they used heat shrink tubing or something....tubing might stay in place better...that or just insulation from a wire...

now you mention the wire i'll probably just rip the wire out and use the little platic end off the wire for the alt 5v pin

I've insulated two of them and haven't done two of them :).. for the two I did insulte I used the alt 5v plastic connector minus the wire... hey it was made for it right?

Anyway... It does seem like it would be hard to short, but knowing Murphy's Law, seems better to do it from here on out.

I installed my X3 in a 1.6. The tutorial told me to remove a pin. I guess it was that one.

or are you all talking about another pin ?
talking about the alt. 5v point on the mod itself, not the pin header. I persaonly didnt insulate it because no one said that we should at the time but it hasnt shorted or anything yet. Next time i open my box up (probably to install cp  ) I will bother to tape that baby up just in case...

BTW, does it matter what instal type your doing it, or on any install type should you tape it up.. :?:

nvm, checked the instal tut and says for pin header...

Xecuter's x3 tut on 1.0-1.5 boxes said:
NOTE: Before fitting the chip to the pin header you must tape up the alt 5v pin (top right just above the backup flash rom) to insulate against any possible shorts - you can also use some rubber insulation from power cable as shown in the picture below. This is for both X3 and X2.6 mods. You should always make sure you use a little diligence and common sense when toying with electrical components.

I did not tape mine, I have fitted a lcd which seems to push the chip away from the MBoard anyway so prob won't bother.

originally, I had not insulated mine, but after I read the post where the kid fried his, as I instlled the new HDD, I pulled the DVD drive and heat shrinked the wire against possible short outs.

Oh That one - yes on the 1.6 I fitted the lead that went to the power transistor.

On my 1.4 box I left it because no one said to insulate it. I have not had a problem so far.

If it blows up I'll just buy a new one. £99 is bugger all really
