I'm currently interested in the recent developments of the Wii modding scene. As some of you may or may not know, two modchips for the Nintendo Wii have been announced, and should start shipping next week. I personally do not have a Nintendo Wii, but my little brother does
I have already purchased my Tri-Wing screwdriver for opening the Wii. I also purchased (and have already received) a Hitachi-LG 8164B DVD-ROM drive for backing up Wii games. I ripped my brother's The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess game a couple days ago. The ripping process takes around 10 hours.
I am in no hurry to get the system modded, so I think I will wait on getting a chip. I do believe the Wiinja code will be dumped and people will be able to program their own PIC chips just by using a programmer. If this becomes possible, there will be people selling clones for like $15-$20. I will wait for that to happen, or wait until an actual drive firmware is released. Because of the nonstandard interface of the Wii drive, in order to hook it up to the PC, you have to make a custom serial cable soldered to the drive PCB. It's actually easier to buy a chip than it is flash the firmware of the drive.
I do not have any interest in starting a website or write tutorials for the Wii. I already have enough to maintain on this site alone. I just thought I'd start a thread in here about the Wii mods.
