Yes, it's all compatible. Here's what you'll need to do:

1. install the chip
2. flash the chip
3. install a dashboard (I would use avalaunch, not evolutionx)
4. back up old hard drive to a computer
5. install and format new hard drive
6. restore contents of old hard drive to new hard drive

i only have a laptop computer. when you say to backup old hard drive(assuming hard drive that came with x-box) then put the contents into the new hard drive(120gb western digital), how would i do that with a laptop computer? i don't have any games saved on the first hd (came with x-box) so couldn't i just throw it away?

Imagine you want to upgrade the hard drive in your laptop. You go buy a new one, and are ready to install it. Would you just throw the old one away and put the new one in and expect things to work? Of course not! There are files on that hard drive that your xbox needs in order to run, even though you don't have any game saves on it. You need to back up the C and E drives of your original hard drive by FTPing into your xbox. Once your dashboard is installed, you hook the xbox up to your home network (if you have one) and you can access the files through FTP.

Yeah, it's fairly straight forward, I have exactly the same HDD in my xbox now. I followed almost exaclty the same process:

Installed the X3
Flashed it with latest bios
FTP'ed to the Xbox using FlashFXP
Copied all the files onto my mates laptop (only 1 or 2 gig of stuff I think)
Installed new drive
Formated new drive using the X3
FTP'ed all the files from laptop onto new drive

all worked nicely, then installed dashboards, etc :)

...and it was my first xbox mod, found all the info I needed in these forums :D

EDIT:
Oh, make sure you specify you have a v1.6b xbox when you order your chip and ask the reseller to put flashbios 3.0.3 onto it for you, will save a lot of headaches later.

Just adding my two cents...

Backuping up your hard drive is ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA....but if your like my newb ass and accidentity deleted everything on you xboox hard drive without backuping up...after you partition your hard drive you can use a self installer disc such as "slayers" to install ms dash and evox along with other apps that are handy. I not 100% sure but i think slayer will also format and partition you hard drive as well as install, but be sure to confim that if you do decide to go this rotue.

Its not the ideal way...but when your newb anything thats works will do !!

 (this aint the garden of eden baby)

Why would you use avalaunch? I thought EvolX was better at utilizing all the features of the X3????
