Speaking in a GDC panel, Mircrosoft narrative designer Tom Abernathy shared his difficulty in trying to find games with starring roles for female characters GI.biz reports that Abernathy, a father, discussed his struggle to find games that his daughter wanted to play, given her preference for female leads. He went on to argue that more diversity is important to the health of the busienss "Women are not a small special market on the fringe of the core. Women are the new core" Abernathy argued, citing changing demographics for gamers. "Our industry, our art, and our business stand to gain in every sense simply by holding a mirror up to our audience and reflecting their diversity in what we produce," he continued. Abernathy's comments follow developer Dontnod's complains that their game, Remember Me, was "shunned" by publishers on account of Nilin, it's female lead.
