Like most of you here, I modded my xbox and was quite satisfied, for a while. I soon decided if i'm gonna have a modchip, I might as well show it with a case mod. I use the clear madcatz wireless, so i thought about the clear case. But i wanted something original and that I do myself. Decided to go with a theme and debated between thundercats, transformers, and star-trek (yeh, im a nerd). Anywho, thudercats it is. I found a photoshop template of a regular xbox and did my worst on it...
I was satisfied with my idea, so to walmart i went and grabbed a few goodies, probably ran me $15.
Already had the torx.
Tore the box apart... notice the wd 120g and the 2.6 chip with the solderless adapter of course.
i love my mod chip...
so back to the project...
I attempted the 'lid in the freezer' trick to get the jewel off, that didn't work, so I grabbed the wife's hairdryer, heated it up and had it off in about 5 minutes.
Took the nerest bottle of fingernail polish remover and doused the jewel with it. Green paint finally started to bubble up. Took an old toothbrush and scrubbed especially in the lettering, 30min later all the paint was off. Unfortunately the asetone ate the plastic and left a foggy film on both sides. Took a piece of the 1000 grit sandpaper and got all that off. Then was the problem of miniscule scratch marks. Grabbed up the wife's fingernail buffer (looks like a tongue compresser) and had it shinny in no time...
Grabbed up all the plastic peices and started sanding. The idea here is to get the shiny off, just rough it up a bit. If you scratch too much, you'l have to put a dozen coats of paint to fill it in. About 45 min later, whipped out the green tape and started taping up areas for the red. Even though my particular box is all black, I figured it wouldn't look right to have only shiny red paint, so I planned to paint the black too. Since i'l paint black last, not too big of a deal to have red overspray.
Took it outside and had at it...
...
As you can see the center triangle pieces were hard to get the shiny offl and thus it doesn't take the paint very well. Same thing went for the fins. The paint goes on quick and it'l run if your not careful, just whatever side/edge your painting, set the box so that its the flat edge until tacky, then you can turn and paint somethin else. Few coats later and it looks good.
You'l notice the extra piece of tape over the center buttons, under it is another piece that's cut so i can paint the button w/o covering the light. I figure on doing both buttons black. So now im waiting on paint to dry, then i'l remove the tape and re-tape it all up for the black. Black is last so we want no overspray.
Let me know what you think
More soon to come...
