Works once but only after the board is removed

I’ve been handed my friend attempt at installing an X3 on a 1.6 xbox.

I’ve cleaned up/removed all of his connections and resoldered them. I even bypassed the section of tracked he burnt off coming from the video card.

I’m trying to keep everything the same as my xbox, which is also a 1.6 using the X3 mod chip. Thus I’ve installed the 1957 version of the BIOS on his as well.

I’ve been able to upgrade the BIOS and use the slayer install to setup the HD. It’s been a bit of a pain though. I kept having problems after I reset the xbox.

Basically if I remove the MB from the xbox ( I’m pretty sure it only resets once all the grounding screws are removed ) and then reconnect everything it works just fine (I can boot to the dash). But as soon as I power it off and then back on it comes up with an Error 9 message. Error 9 from what I’ve read is -->" kernel - HDD parameters (PIO/DMA/or size {debug}, certain size minimum is required for debug).' It keeps giving me that error until I remove the MB again.

He added a 200Gig drive. (Quantum I think) But it does the same thing with my 160 Maxtor

Any help would be appreciated.

I do know that you will need the latest (1959) BIOS to support any drives over 130 odd gig. Once in that BIOS screen, you should be able to set up the drive in a jiffy and see if it supports locking etc.

Is there any chance either or both of the drives have been locked on another machine? You can only unlock a hdd on the machine it is being used on.

Try the new BIOS and then see what happens.

As for the mobo thing, there must be a short somewhere .... solder splash maybe, or a track that you missed? not sure ...

Good luck

Both drives work fine on mine and on his (kind of). They only work on his after the MB is reset. It it was locked or unlocked in correctly I would have expected it to fail everytime.

I'll go looking for a short again. It's the only thing I can think of but I just couldn't see it last night.
