X3 and 1.6b problems.

I need some help here identifying what my X3 should be doing and what it isn't. Basically my mate chips PS2s, and has done 20 or so no probs. So i decided he could do my x3 fitting, printed him the instructions from the xecuter site, and gave him the box and chip. I had it back next day but didn't think to try it until last night as it is supposed to be a xmas present.
Also I swapped the stock hdd for an NTFS-formatted Maxtor 200gig. The xbox itself is a 1.6b crystal.
Now the problems. With the new hdd/x3 installed I get a quick flash on/off of a blue LED from the x3 itself when I power on. The external LED display doesn't light up at all and get either error 5 (with game) or error 16 (w/o game).
So I decided to use the stock hdd to see if that worked. It just acted as if there was no x3 installed, and booted up normally. Again quick flash from the x3 chip itself and no external LED lights.
Sound like a faulty x3 install or have I just missed something altogether? He said that he checked the circuit (multimeter?) throughout the install and everything seemed ok, so I was happy enough, until now.

Also he has soldered the alternate 5v wire, and it is firmly in the chip and the solder point seems 100%.

Also the picture from the xecuter guide, (caption above - 'This is how everything..'), shows 3 blue wires referring to LADs 0,1+2. Now 1+2 are as per diagram but, for LAD0, he has soldered onto the pinhead underneath the board as shown, but instead of soldering to the point (beside R7P4) he has used a long strand of wire and looped it around to the top of the mobo. He has then soldered that end to the Xyclops chip, about 1.5cm squared, which is an inch or so to the right of the ribbon cable socket for the cd drive. Why, I do not know, but it seems to be causing probs.

As for the LEDs on the x3 chip only the blue LED flashes on then off when the power button is pressed (either switching on or off), or if the power button is held in then so the LED remains lit. But I have not noticed any other LED light on the chip nor any lights on the external display.

I really need to find out what the problem is soon because he can only fix any probs tomorrow, else I have to wait til the new year for a fix and I can't wait that long. Basically I need to be able to tell the guy exactly what to do in laymans terms so he can get it right this time.

Any guidance very much appreciated. Cheers.

not enough info..

do you get the blue flash bios cromwell screen? is the switch bank on the front of your xbox? if so is dip switch 1 and 2 on and the rest of off?

you did not mention this, has the executer 3 chip been flashed with a bios? like executer bios?

without this info cant even begin to troubleshoot..

but the install sounds a bit strange, but when pro chipers know what they doing they do use alternative solder points.

anyway provide further info and ill see what else i can advise..

Great thanks. OK I'll answer as best I can.

No flash bios screen at all. Only ever the 'flubber' xbox screen with the stock hdd or error 5/16 with the Maxtor (formatted in PC, unsure if locked or not).

Yes the switch bank is on the front although I have tried 1+2 on/rest off and 3+4 on/rest off but nothing. The display itself is never lit up at any stage.

As far as bios goes I dont know. I purchased it from divineo uk about 2 weeks ago.

The guy is a pro chipper but only as far as ps2. This is pretty much his first xbox job and definately his first x3/1.6b job.

At least it sounds like we are getting somewhere at least. Cheers.

Hi

Well if you do not see the cromwell bios screen when you turn on i would suggest 3 things.

1. Have you tried pressing and holding eject and power buttons at same time to see if you get the cromwell bios screen? if you do then ignore step 2.

2. take the executer 3 switch out, and plug the yellow cable direct in to motherboard first, and see if you get the blue flash cromwell screen.

3. if you get nothing after doing the above, then its a faulty install, and get your installer to check his install.

4. one last thing, i have seen posts regarding x3 chips being shipped with no cromwell bios on the chip, if there is no cromwell bios on the chip then this means you will get no where.. invistagate this possabilty but its proably a bad install ... let me know how you go..

good luck.

To FoxRacR17 - No LPC rebuild, just used the 1.6 install guide from here almost exactly. And yes the d0 connection as shown in the guide is also done.

Deltasg1

1. Pressing both together does nothing at all. No power on, unless I quickly release eject and then back down again. Still flubber screen

2. The switch for the banks you mean? If so then it is connected to the chip by black wires. Not sure which cables you mean, sorry? If you could reference the 1.6 x3 guide from here then I could have a look.

3. Ah crap :(

4. How could I determine this?

Lastly, regarding the LEDs on the chip itself. Is there not supposed to be two lit up when switched on? But I only get the blue one, and it only flashes on then off at power up, doesn't stay on. Any ideas?

Yeah sorry..

Ill bit a bit more clear.. (i hope)

inside the xbox the X3 chip has a orange wire comming from the chip, that connects to the switch panel inside the xbox, this handles the switch and power fuctions, its called a switch panel and you will only be able to see this inside the xbox if your xbox is sealed and dont have tools to open it, then you wont be able to check this.

but to confirm, i am not talking about the x3 chip im talking about the switch panel, you will find a bunch of yelllow wires going into it and it will be located near the main power connector on the xbox mobo.

this bunch of yellow cables before the chip was installed whould have plugged directly into the xbox mobo, but since you have installed the x3 chip, that bunch of yellow wires now goes into the switch panel that comes with the x3 chip.

this is what i mean, disconect the yellow wires from that switch panel and unplug the black cable from the switch panel that goes to the xbox mobo then plug the yellow cable stright into the xbox mobo where it belongs.

turn on xbox see if you get the flashbios blue screen. if you do then you know that the switch panel is causing you a problem. if this does not change anything then at least you can elimnate this from your troubleshotting checklist.

i installed an x3, and had weird frags due to the switch panel having a solder splash...

good luck.

Thanks for the exact explanation delta. However I just went and took the chip away and set it back into place for the 1000th time today and you wouldn't believe it, progress!

Here is what I get now. BOTH leds on the x3 chip AND the external panel lights, although only the HD one, not LAN. However it now shows nothing at all, just a black screen and I noticed after 10-15 secs the main power led turns amber?

I tried banks 1/2 and 3/4 but same outcome.

You have been a great help, thanks. At least I know now it is partially working. :)

xecuter said:
why dont you try looking in the right place and reading the right stickies about black screen after install ?

you would have saved yourself so much f**king around
That pretty much sums it up. Harshly put maybe, but true. Thanks again to delta for the patience.

Re: Spoofed drive still says play dvd. Am i talking to myse

your right, sorry but i was only typing like that due to my frustration. I was in the middle of flashing my lite on and it died on me, lucky i had extracted the keys before this.

I have spent about 3 days doing this. I really do feel like i am wasting my time and it might be time to call it a day.
