I installed my X3 about 2 weeks ago and everything has been working fine until today. I was running the X3 and got ready to turn off my Xbox. When I pushed the power button I had static discharge to the Xbox and now when I do a short press of the power button the X3 BIOS won't power up. I tried a different BIOS setting and still nothing. I booted to my backup which came up fine and tried to reflash with both Bank 1234: on on off off
Bank 5678: off on off off and I get an unknown flash halting error. Any ideas on what to do next?
Thanks

what i dont understand is how you discharged (wow sounds funny) on the power button if its all plastic, or atleast i thought it was... Have you moved your xbox around recently? Try checking the connections of the cables and make sure they are snug on the reset/eject board or even the switch.

I have not moved my XBOX at all. I simply pressed the power button, I felt a shock and then I tried to boot with the X3 mod chip and I get the red light which means I am running the Microsoft BIOS instead. I can boot into the backup BIOS though but I can not reflash. I have a theory but I would like to hear from other people on how to possibly fix it before I draw any conculsions.

there are two flash protect switch's the one on the inside and the one on the switch bank that could be your problem or you could have writen a bad disk

good luck

I forgot to include that I was flashing from the network. I flashed from the network before with no problems using the cromwell BIOS.

okay so cd is ruled out but there is still the posiblity of a messed up file or like i said before one of the flash protect switches could be on

Either my couch or my chair.
resolder your pins 13 and 14 on the lpc bus. if you can get cromwell, but not the x3 bios, thats your problem.

So do you think that the static discharge dislodged the solder joint?

Thanks

I have noticed an increase in bull posts, this seems to coincide with a report that the X3 might be blowing up 1.6 Xbox's.

We really have hit the limit with this one. There is NO WAY you could have a static discharge through the power button.

Fact is if this is a real post - you have not installed it correctly - and you have a either a short or a dry joint.

Where should I start...........?

I would think that if you have such a high level of understanding regarding switches that you would also know (I am assuming here and we all know what that does.) that a switch has to have some metallic parts inside it somewhere. Voltage is defined as a potential difference between to given points (electrically speaking). When the potential difference is high enough between to points electricity will begin to flow between those points until the two points do not have a high enough difference in electrons to continue electrical flow. When an air gap is induced into this equation and the difference is high enough we see a spark (roughly 10,000 volts per inch varying with frequency some) I would also find it hard to believe your explanation of an improper install if I was able to successfully flash my X3 BIOS and use it for two weeks.

I was asking for help concerning a legitimate problem that I am having with my system and I find your level of understanding to be substandard. If you do not have an answer or idea and or can not portray it in a way that would be helpful then don't bother coming up with some Bull post as you put it in response to my question.

To everyone else that has tried to help me so far I thank you for your responses.

it is true that the switch does have metal in it somewhere but heres where the whole static discharge thing doesn't work.... if you did somehow send a charge through the switch, the switch is grounded to the metal casing of the interior xbox case. which means it would have just gone to ground.

the power going through the switch panel isnt enough to jump the gap between the plastic and your skin, static discarge doesnt happen if the static cant be earthed, im assuming your xbox wasnt in peices and attached to the floor with metal bolts, and im also assuming you hadnt been sat there for a few hours prior, rubbing yourself with baloons and other sources of static charge.

it's more probable that you "discharged" onto the metal casing inside the xbox, though even if this is the case, that cage is earthed too buddy.

simply put, far short of being hit by a bolt of lightning whilst turning on/off your xbox, it is not possible for static charge to jump through a low voltage power button and make the modchip "random"

So how about you check those solder points and stop pointing fingers at freak science?

Are you still able to boot to your backup bios?

If you are and can't flash through the network then try a different way.

Well I got my XBOX working again. I bought a new X3 just installed it and everything is working fine. Here is my conclusion. I was running my X3 primary BIOS when the static discharge occurred and I believe it fried my primary BIOS. I could still use my backup BIOS because it's on a separate chip. I do appreciate the ones who volunteered to help me on this issue. I will be installing a static discharge strap on my entertainment center and I will be touching it before I touch anything else in entertainment center.

Does anybody know where I can find just an X3 board? I have a full install kit and would like to get a X3 board so I can hook my buddy up with one.

Thanks
