X3 install problem [fixed]

Ok, now I'm fairly skilled with electronics, and yet I can't find anything wrong with my install...the chip is acting very weird however.

Edit: Xbox Version: 1.0

1. First boot, booted into bios fine, loaded and init drives perfectly. Then, tried to boot regular, and got purple on the display panel and booted to chip (backup i believe), then tried the eject button and the power shut off.

2. After attempting to turn it on a few times, it eventually kicked up the fan and started blinking orange (amber) - meaning (i believe) that the chip is overheating, however everything's plugged in and all fans are working.

3. Removed mod, tried turning on xbox again, would boot to xbox bios, freeze, and overheat.

4. Plugged everything back in for mod, frags every once in a while, etc. still no luck.

Checked all traces, every pin is connected, no shorted pins (except 9 and 15 of course, being 3.3v), very confused, especially with the eject button causing the system to shut off...below are a few pictures of the job...

Re: X3 install problem

also if you think it is over heating get a house fan and leave the case open and blow the fan directly onto the xbox that should keep box cool enough, i do it on my pc when i dont feel like listening to the 3 tornadoes run

Re: X3 install problem

yip, fan kicks up to high gear too when it blinks orange...

i seem to get a conglomerate of error lights... =/ it does however boot and i can even start a network flash boot, and get to the webserver on the chip, but before i can flash the bios it goes to amber blinking...

I can't bypass the chip using the power button, and the eject button turns off the xbox. very odd, I am going to remove the pin header and resolder it again, hopefully something odd is happening and that fixes it, although I've already checked all the leads coming from the LPC port and they all make connectivity so I'm very confused...

Edit: if you touch the sink it's cold to the touch, and I've changed the thermal paste on it to some nice artic silver...
however, i may try a house fan just for the hell of it see if perhaps that might be the problem... =/ i don't think that it's actually overheating however, that there is some sort of problem with the x3 that is somehow sending an overheat signal...

Re: X3 install problem

I'm having the same problem. I can get up and going for about 30 seconds and then it shuts me down and then fan speeds up and I get the blinking amber for a while. I'm stuck on this one.

update

i took the chip out again, and it boots the dash ok, and boots into a game, although about 30-60 seconds later it flashes orange and kicks up the fan acting like it's overheating, yet the heatsink is cold and there is no sign of overheating...

err, starting to annoy me alot!

I also checked all the voltages, the only one that I could see that is off is pin 1 which shows as like 1.6V - all the others show their correct values

Re: X3 install problem

May just be your picture but I see alot of solder spatter on some of those pins and I also see spatter joining 2 traces causing a short. I hope you used a low heat solder pen and not a 120/240 watt Gun. the soldering should be done with a 30watt pen

yea, i noticed that in the pictures, it's not on the board though, they're quite noticable...lol =)

as for the gun, i don't use a pen or gun, I use a weller wes50 adjustable temperature iron (i'm an electronics engineer...yippie)

as for another update:

chip is back in, boots to bios, fixed the eject problem, friggin pad on the power/eject board was soldered together, fixed that and no more worries on the eject button, can boot regular, disabled, and backup ...

current problem:
it boots up just fine, plays games, haven't been able to flash just yet due to a problem when after about 30-60 seconds it seems to overheat (blinking orange and kicking up fan) - although fan is connected and heatsink is cool to the touch

any ideas?

Edit: adding pictures:

xbox network boot, seems ok, but can't upload via web or connect via ftp

just another shot =)

Re: X3 install problem

Not sure why you are getting the amber light
REF the network if connected direct to pc use a cross over cable if going through hub / router use striaght cat 5. Make sure you have internet connection sharing on.when you have connected xbox type IP address in internet explorer. Browse to your bios folder and away you go

as for the cable, i'm plugged in to my router/switch with it, so i'm using a straight through (patch) cable, and I get an IP address, I've succssfully gotten into it so that I flashed over the new bios and everything's goin good now.

my only problem now is this stupid light, there's no reason for it, and the temps seem good =/

Re: X3 install problem

doubleshot where did you get the mod chip at? What type of chip are you using? If it isn't from this site please let us know where at. Let us look at the pics of the directions. And if you can send the pics of the top and bottom again. And where the eject switch fix wire goes off the chip and the board.
Let see if we can't get this going.

try to flash the X3 1959 Bios via a CDRW or DVDR
i flashed with x3 1959 bios last night, and was playing with it, same problems though... seems the temps keep climbing, they start at like 35C and last time i saw 45C before it shut off...

any other ideas?

I bought the chip from system-mods.com ... i'll take a pic of where the solder bridge was on the board in a few when I feel like dissassembling the box again. The chip is an Xecuter3 that came with Flashbios 3.0.1 and has been installed using the pin header method. Any other info you need?

Re: X3 install problem

hey you guys, thanks for all your help...it's fixed!

just as i was giving up, ready to pull out the pin header, and see if the xbox still worked as an xbox w/ mod completely removed, i started sucking up the solder...

then i realized, it's gonna take a ton of work to remove this damned thing, so gave up, put it all back together, and fired it up thinking it was going to it's doom ... to my suprise, it booted, and has been up for about 10 min now...

i'm wicked happy!

Re: X3 install problem

Has the heatsink been disturbed on the CPU? If its not seated correctly this could cause temps to raise gradually.

ok, solved the problem once again...

I've uninstalled the pin header, and did a wire install ... everything's peachy now, i fully recommend a wire install on v.1.0 boxes!

thanks alot for all your help! =)
got the same problem (except that amber light flashing right after power on and fan is blowing like crazy, then xbox going off, then on, then on again and finally off).. but sometime (after 10-15 minutes ) it powers up boots to msdash (no chip now, only ping header installed) for 30 sec then going down with crazy fan and amber light... going to try remove pin header and see if it helps (at least to get xbox working for 20-30 mins)
