Hello,

I looked everywhere on this forum and couldn't find anyone with this problem, so here goes.

I have a version 1.1 Xbox, according to the sites I have seen (although my pin header holes were filled which I thought was only 1.0) Regardless, it's an early model box. I bought it a long time ago.

I took the solder out of the holes, soldered the chip in, installed the switch panel, put it all back together, and when I started it up:

1) With the 2MB bios: I tapped the power button, and it turned on and went off by itself three times. The third time it stayed on but the light was blinking (yellow, I think). I pushed the eject button once and then it accessed the chip and I got the bios screen.

2) with the chip disabled: I held down the power button, it did the same triple start, with a frag. So I pushed the eject button once, and the MS dashboard came up.

3) with the 256k backup bios: I held both buttons, it did the same triple start, with a frag, except it wouldn't work after I pushed eject as with the other two times.

4) Now the box will not start no matter what I do, whether the chip is in or out, whether I have a disk in the DVD tray or not. It just does a triple sputter start, and then the light blinks yellow. Seems like my Xbox is jacked and now I need a new one.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

I would think that if it was a hardware problem, it wouldn't work at all. It worked, in a way, until I booted from backup ROM. Then something happened. I don't know what. That sounds like a software issue to me, like the MS bios were erased or something.

I'm not doubting you, I'm just trying to make sense of it all.

could be your xbox overheating, make sure the fan's plugged in. other then that if it doesn't work without the chip you've done some damage to the motherboard, proabably a burnt or lifted trace. also make sure your dvd and hdd are plugged in when your trying to boot up your xbox

I can see and hear the fan running. So that's no problem. I'm pretty sure I have the DVD and HD plugged in the way they were before, so I guess that leaves the damaged trace thing again, as talon was saying.

I'll look around the board for damage, but it still doesn't seem like it would be hardware...

Thanks.

I have a 1.1 x3ce that has developed the same problem; it will boot to the ms dash (long power press) but going to the x3 does the 3 reboots then frag. I'm going to strip it and resolder the pin header; I think (from reading the other threads) its most likely a dry joint. this is after it working quite happily for 3 weeks! hey ho, warm up the iron..

When you solder again make sure to use flux. If you don't know what or where ask a local electronic tech (not RadioShack, they probably won't know, never do). Flux helps the solder wick to the pins and the via's for a better connection. Always use flux, and clean up afterwards with a toothbrush and alcohol.

Good luck.
