I've looked every where and read HDD replacement tutorials and cant find anything telling what type of HD to get to replace the Xbox HDD. I noticed on all the mod websites they have 2mb cache instead of 8mb, does this matter? I need a quick response so I can order a new HDD to replace my xbox one. I will have X3 installed, does that make a difference? I've been looking at a Hitachi 250gb HD with 8mb cache. Just a quick response explaining what type of drive I should get would be greatly appreciated.

thanks guys,
Austin

any IDE drive will work. as long as it is IDE, then you will have no problems.

i would say anything over 70 probably is a bit dodgy, one or two degrees over is ok but into the 80s and its looking like a big problem

You should get the Maxtor Diamond Mac 120gb. Cheap, fast, quiet and cool

im using a maxtor diamond max 9 200gb. works fine as any other hdd would. I an't really tell you its the best hdd because i never had a chance to try out any other brands. I don't really think theres a difference in performance between brand when your looking for a drive for your xbox.

The first generation of 7200rpm HDDs got hot...but since then manufacturers have introduced a number of things to cool and quiet them down. The 250gb Maxtor I have in my box runs at less than 25c...I ran it in my computer for 2 months. Only my oldest 40gb 7200rpm drive runs at over 30c...which still isn't bad at all

I have a Maxtor 300GB and an IBM 30GB in one of my boxes. I dont have any issues with it (except I have no DVD )

If some one can throw me a link to a tut about modding a PC dvd it would be very cool.

**edit Dont bother I have bought a new One :)

What I plan on is simple enough, not going to go high end in a moderate box but I found a 120G at 5400 would rather find @ 250 or there abouts but the price isnt too bad. As I have ordered from em before it isnt too bad of a business I had a ZIP drive I wanted an EIDE PCI adapter for I ordered one at 24.00 but somebody should have told the shipper not to use product for packing material. There were 3 in the box but I only got billed for the one.

If you want to keep it cool, the best option currently on the market are the Samsung V80 series drives. 5400 rpm, 1 or 2 platters. I have the 160 gig model, works wonders and is cool to the touch even after extended periods.

Oh, and you won't see a speed difference between the 5400/7200 rpm models or 2/8 megs cache on an Xbox (unless you're running Linux)...
