Okay, here's the deal ...

I have an x3 installed properly on my v1.0, and was transferring files over via ftp from my comp. However, my system was unable to finish copying all the files, and my xbox posted a msg from the bios screen asking me if i wanted to flash the eeprom. YES was pressed (long story, don't ask ... just know that I said YES to the eeprom flash ... bad idea, i know.)

and now I receive error 06 on start up. Am I FUBAR? I don't have any files on this stock hdd ... what are my options? other than buying a new system?

Error 6 is (I believe) the HDD lock error. Basically, when you wrote over your EEPROM, you trashed the unlock code for the HDD. So now, when you boot, the xbox can't unlock the drive.

Your options:
(1)Try one of a few experimental ways to recover that lost key, which only so often works, or
(2) if you really don't care about that drive (you were gonna replace it anyway, right ;-) ), just slap a new HDD in there, format with the x3, use slayers if you want to set up the original files (so I'm told) and don't do it again, or
(3) Buy a new system, which would only be necessary (and maybe not even then) if you used to be on LIVE and want to get a new account.

Honestly, if that was the stock drive and you don't care about it, and you arent going to be getting on LIVE anyway, then just replace the drive, setup with slayers, and you'll never miss that small 8 or 10 gigger...

Op,

Thanks for the tips - I'll try option two tomorrow ... I've also heard that if I wanted to set up a larger hdd for Live, i could do so by creating two partitions ... one 10-gigger and the rest on a separate part. Is this true?

also, the Admin, C, D, E, F, G... folders i see on the drives when i FlashFXP into them are FOLDERS right? NOT partitions?

those are all partitions except for the admin because thats the chip.

Right, as rh said, those are partitions, except for the Admin folder, which is where you would ftp a BIOS you wanted to flash or something like that.

As far as setting up 2 partitions, one for LIVE and one for everything else... don't think that is a go. You see, the x3 will setup your drive for you so that the xbox can use it, which will force certain things (C, E, X,Y,Z, all of which have a set size that you can't change). The rest of your drive can be allocated to F or F and G partitions, but there is a lot of discussion about what will and will not get you banned from LIVE. Bottom line, though, is that you can't "trick" LIVE into thinking you have your stock drive when you don't. The xbox will see the whole drive.

Check around the forum in other areas, threads - there are a lot of people here who know a lot more about what will and will not work on LIVE than I do.

In any case, good luck.

Hey,
First and foremost. Xbox Live DOES NOT scan your hard drive. This is a common misconception, people think there is a "stealth" mode when there isn't.

Since last March M$ has been recording eeprom and hard drive info. If you change your hard drive and go on xbox live they will ban you. You need to stay on with the original hard drive that you first logged on with.
(notice that I didn't mention hard drive scanning)

The partitions are set by the BIOS. You used to be able to change the partitions but not since they have started encrypting them.

Right - excellent point. My bad for being ambiguous. I didn't mean to imply they were scanning the hard drive, only that the xbox has certain partitions and that is that (no 10GB "original setup", and then a 200GB "mod setup" - at least not without something like the xtender).

Floppy, you're referring to marraige theory, correct? Basically, how the box exists when you first sign on is how it must stay, because the serial number for the xbox and the serial for the harddrive are both recorded. So, to jtronic, if you have never signed on LIVE, you could be ok, so long as you set everything up, sign on, and then don't change anything.

I think. To confess, I don't use LIVE. Take everything I say concerning it with a grain of salt.
