X3 - Partitioning F to over 250GB?

Sorry if this has been posted before, I've searched around and can't see any posts about this.

I've just put a 320GB hard drive (WD3200JB) in my xbox.
It has an X3 with 1959 BIOS.

I used the X3 Disk Tools to prepare and format the HD and selected "one big F drive".

The F drive is now of course over 250GB -- it's at 290GB.

I've read that when a partition is over 250GB and it hasn't got 32k clusters, there's corruption as soon as you write past the 250GB barrier.

So, my question is, does the X3 Disk Tools make 32k clusters for big partitions, or am I going to have to reformat with either 32k clusters or F and G partitions?

Thanks!

That's a very good question. But my question to you is why not just use a G partition and not have to worry about it?

Because I've already put over 60GB of files on the F: drive in the last 3 days, and I also like using one big drive.

If necessary, I can reformat, but I'd rather not if I don't have to.

From everything I've read you should be ok. Other guys have 300gb+ in their xbox's as well. So, I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Other people may have 300GB hard drives, but you don't see a problem until the partition has over 250GB of files on it.
Unless anyone actually knows if X3 uses 32k clusters, the safe option is a reformat, or you'll lose data (*all* of it). So I'll wait until there's a definitive answer from someone in the know, or I guess eventually I'll decide to reformat if I don't hear anything!

More info at: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=262108&hl=fatx

For example:
"I tried to transfer another game to F: (I had about 16GB free in that partition),
When the transfer just hang. I restarted the Xbox, just to discover that all my
files (280GB) disappeared, except part of the last game..."

i have read about the hdd's getting a little messed up when a partition is 250gb+ and is filled and most likely data coruption will occur like you said. good thing you did your research. I sugest you do reformat to be safe unless someone else confirms the way x3 config live formats.

Hi All, This is my first post so be kind!

I have put a 400GB drive into an xbox and everything worked perfectly past the 250GB barrier, until there was only 85GB free. Then I could not put anything else on the disk. I have since worked out that it is not a size issue but a FAT problem. The FAT cannot hold all the information from a drive that size. I removed one of the larger things on there (4GB in 15000+ files) and could then put 3 more things on (15Gb in 4000 files).

After reformatting with a 137Gb F: and the rest as G: everything works perfectly - all 375GB.

Hope this helps!
