I went to turn "the box" on after being cozy under a blanket and what appeared to be a static lightning bolt shot from my finger to the box power button...

1.Now as soon as I plug the power cable in it boots up to a "call service" screen with error code 5 (my HD was unlocked with evox , btw) and wont power down until the power cord is yanked.

2.The ejct button flashes red/green (fragging?)

3. the X symbol is now RED. on my cntl pnl/dip selector.

the eject button is unresponsive, and it will not power up or down using the power switch.
If I unplug the mod, i can power up and down with the switch, but still have no eject, and still get the error code 5 screen (hard drive?)

I cannot try the backup bios since I have no control of the power button when the X3 is plugged in.

Does this sound like the chip is fried or does anyone think the ESD damage could be in the motherboard too? I dont have my HD lock code handy to relock the drive in my PC to see if it will boot on a locked drive.

Any suggestions? I've already reordered another X3 just in case.

thts the first i heard of somethin like that happening. I have no clue what went wrong. I guess it could have been static shock but the chip n stuff is so far in there. Was the Xbox closed or open?

I didnt think it possible either, but I sure saw and felt the blue ESD from my fingertip to the box, was about a 1/2 inch spark. (it was closed and screwed together btw).
Will know for sure when the new X3 arrives this week.

Found the other link of same prob...

Static will only screw up the part you touch, say you rubed your foot accross carpet and touched a IC on the x3 or xbox then it will blow the IC it is the same thing with computers. Now if you did blow an IC on the x3 and you put it in the xbox then your xbox will be fine since the damage was caused to the one IC, it doesn't spread like a virus. Now on the other hand if the static charge was high enough then the charge could blow the IC and another componet beside ie a resister or another IC depending on the charge. Hope this helps.

I have had this same problem.. It has actually just happened to me twice.. It just happened to me for the secound time tonight.. Both times it happened when i was turning it off after getting out of my chair and walking across the living and turning it off.. the spark was about a half of an inch long.. when i got my new chip in after the first chip fried, i replaced only the main chip and everything worked fine.. very strange but i am having a hard time spending $50 on my third X3.. this shouldn't happen. I might just reinstall the good ol' xecuter 2.3, no problems with that chip at all.

Just happened to me tonight. :(
X3CE has been working for about 3 weeks with no problems. Now, only boots to MS dash and X3 logo is constantly red. I've tried resoldering D0 but I think static killed it. I don't really want to have to buy another X3. Is there a jumper or something on the modchip itself to always enable it?

If I end up buying an X3, I don't want to use the power switch mod. Can it be unplugged or does the X3 require the power switch?

Hey Team Xecuter. Did you guys put dual diodes on the modchip (or better yet the connection board) for this input signal to protect against static discharge?

Obviously they didn't put anything on it to protect from static shock.. my recomendation is to not buy another chip.. like i said i had it happen to me twice.. Soft mod your box, it cost nothing. It sucks they are doing nothing to warranty or correct this problem.. I have bought and installed many xecuter chips.. but i most say until they adress this issue they have lost a customer.. it seems to be happening to quite a few people. But the issue is still being ignored. I used a package called Softmod Installer Deluxe v2.0, It couldn't be easier to use.
