I saw something in the forum about this but I didn't see an answer.
This is a pic of a wire install on a v1.6, if I go this route do I still have to do a lpc rebuild?

No, you would be running the wires that normally go to the LPC pins DIRECTLY to the live points on the MB. That's the whole point of that picture .... it shows you where those wires would go on a 1.6 instead of connecting them to the pin header.

Is there a diagram of this this method for the bottom of the mobo floating around anywhere? Soldering the top of the board just doesn't tick my fancy.
