X3 worked fine for 2 months, now problems...

Okay I am getting really frustrated so I figure its time to ask some questions…

I have a 1.0 Xbox with an X3 installed via pin header. I have had it working fine for the past 2 months, with minimal to no problems. Then all of a sudden when I would try to boot up with the mod enabled it would FRAG. This started happening primarily after an application would crash. To fix the problem I would usually unplug the cables from the back of the console and let it sit for 10 minutes or so. Usually when I would plug it back in it would boot up just fine. I have been reading the forums here and at XS and cant find any good reason as to why. I did however see something regarding taping of the 5v pin that wasn’t in the original tutorial. So I decided to do that yesterday.

I had the box open after I taped it up and decided to try to boot it. It turned on and turned right back, so I figure it would FRAG. I tapped the red wire that goes from the power switch board to the X3 and the second time it turns on it boots just fine. Strange… So I try again. Same thing, first time it wont boot, but I tape the wire and it boots. So I try to arrange my wires better and make everything fit nicely. I also decided to tape up the wires on the bottom of the board a little better.

Well now I am at a loss. I cant get the damn thing to boot with the mod enabled at ALL anymore. To make matters worse I can barely get the MS Dash to boot when the chip is plugged in. I can probably get the MS DASH to boot 1 out of 10 times. I tried pulling the chip out of the pin header and the MS DASH boots fine every time. So obviously something is wrong.

I checked all my solder connections and everything SEEMS fine. I cant see anything bridged and the D0 seems pretty good too. I mean the damn thing worked fine for months, the only thing I did was add some electrical tape in a few places. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am really at a loss. I guess I can I can pull off all the solder from the pin header and try again. I am just not that great at soldering and it took me a hell of a lot of effort to get it right the first time. I guess I just don’t understand why it would be a soldering issue if it worked fine for a couple months and now it is having all these problems… Help please!

1.0 xbox, wire install.

i have the same problem. i had the same problem during my original install.
i know the d0 is wired correctly, because when i take off the d0, it boots straight to the original dash, plug in the d0, it frags.
everything had been working fine for about a day *after i finally got it to stop fragging* and i was updating xbmc, tried out one of the skins, it crashes. restart the system. fragging. right now the system is unplugged, and i will see what happens after i let it sit for a while.

your probably gonna hafta do some resoldering. A soldering connection might have come loose from maybe moving your xbox around(bumping...whatever)

yeah, it happened earlier, i havent checked the connections right now *going to wait a little longer for power to totally drain, at least long enough for a clock reset.*

but this did happen before, even with the d0 making a good connection.
the problem solved itself during install when i put in an original xbox hdd *even though it was from another box* instead of the 80gb unlocked i had.
seemed also to only boot up to flashbios during install is when i had a disk in the dvd drive, or when i had the ethernet cable connected. anyone who knows anything about softmoding knows this is ways to throw off the boot sequence, to fix the horrid *now extinct* clock loop. this leads me to believe its a problem with how the x3 handles boot processes. also seems to explain why theres so many posts about d0 problems and fragging.

heres what ive noticed: d0 unplugged = no start up of the chip at all. d0 plugged = fragging.

ok so next step, check the lpc. this is a 1.0 xbox, wire install isnt exactly brain surgery. its not hard to see that the wires are connected to pads filled with solder.

again, this was working fine about an hour ago, i update xbmc, dash crashes, i reset *that was the only "bumping" around, the actual press of the reset button, which the xbox didnt move at all* and now its fragging. i will leave the power off for about 2-3 hours, and then post my results.

edit: for clarification.

alright, well after some time, i plugged the xbox back in, started it up, same problem.

i take apart the xbox, i notice that the 5v led is not lighting up. so i check the connection. yep, the long red wire is soldered to pinout 6. the wire is soldered directly in the middle of the solder so i know its making a connection, is there another spot i could try? should i attempt to solder this pinout on the bottom of the board? *its the long red wire, so it should wrap around to the bottom of the mobo.*

problem solved. 5v trace on the modchip was fried. repairing now.

other solutions i found my searching:
unplug switch adapter from power/eject.
check pins on switch plug in to chip.

well since its a 1.0, i had it mounted to the side of the case, it appears that the small bit of area where the sticky pad doesnt cover the chip is where the trace fried. my assumption is that maybe the chip was pressed against the side of the case. again, i assumed the chip would be covered well enough this small trace wouldnt be touched. oh well. im simply going to run a wire from the lpc pin on the chip to the alt 5v pin on the back of the chip, insulate with some hot glue, and use electrical tape to cover the entire back of the chip.

Re: Benq flash failed

You have to keep trying the step where you power the drive off and back on. I've had that happen once and that was how I got around it.
