I say give up on Linux becoz its pretty useless unless your PC is a 486.

There are alot of methods of running linux and the instructions vary with each distribution. You don't need much space to run it too... varies from 50MB to 4GB...
GentooX Home is very complete and has pretty much everything.
Its very slow if you use KDE windows manager and requires 4GB.
Instructions are all in the image file, I think FTP is the easiest installation.
You FTP a few files over and run it like an application from the dashboard.
xDSL is handy and the basics if you just want to play with the operating system.
Only 50MB!
