X3CE in a 1.6

I have just purchased an X3CE for my version 1.6 crystal XBox. From another thread I understand that the BIOS's are loaded as follows:

X3CE
Banks 1-4 v3.01
Banks 5-8 v3.03
Backup v3.01

I also understand that only v3.01 will work on my version of the XBox. So how do I go about flashing it? As I will not need v3.03 of FlashBIOS I would like to write the X3 BIOS to bank 5678? Is it possible for me to load the XBox with the v3.01 BIOS and then overwrite the v3.03 BIOS? If so, how do I do it? Is it safe to switch the bank switches whilst the XBox is powered up?

Secondly, I have read that the backup FlashBIOS can be upgraded, I don't want to do it, as I will have no need to, but 'is' it possible and if so how? I ask because I thought the backup BIOS was on ROM (Read-Only Memory).

If all goes wrong, and I need to boot the thing using the back-up 3.01 bios, I understand I press both the power and eject buttons, can I then just flash to any banks I choose?

Thanks digthebox. That's the most informative procedural post that I've seen. I think WoodZ is stuck at the same point as I am where the chip is installed and more precise information is needed above the tutorial on how to Flash his particular version (in his case its a 1.6, mine is 1.6b). His and my questions are the same:
1. Are there different unhacked starting bios on the 1234 and 5678 banks?
2. If the Flash doesn't work, how do you restore the bank chosen (1-4 or 5-8) to its previous state?

1) yes there should be different cromwell bios on each bank ,exactly as woodz described in his post.

2) you have to make sure that once you have booted up the correct flashbios for your particular version xbox that you do not then proceed to flash over the working flashbios.
ie for a 1.6b (yours) you would boot banks 5-8 (3.03) and then once booted reset your dipswitches to banks 1-4 (on,on,off,off) BEFORE you begin to flash.
That way you overwrite the non working 3.01 flash bios in banks 1-4 and can get back to a working state by restarting with banks 5-8 selected again.
You have to be extra careful with a 1.6b as u only have 3.03 in one location ...if u overwrite this with a screwed up bios flash then u have no backup or other banks to select to recover from it.

Once you have a working hacked bios in the first 1M bank you can then go about upgrading the backup bios thru CFL to add a bit of belts and braces to flash recovery.
