Can anyone tell me what I'm supposed to do with this (attached)? It arrived with the control panel (not connected) but I'm not sure where it fits in... I'm starting to think its an unnecessary extra sent by mistake.. does anyone know??

appears to be the usb ports the control ports plug into the board and the white goes into the usb and black goes to mobo or daughtboard.
Thats what i think not sure.

X3CP Install Instrutions

Maybe I won't need them. Maybe they are here somewhere and I missed them.

Are there install instructions for the CP, or is it pretty self explanatory when it arrives at my doorstep?

I too wondered what they were for and realised they must be USB. I can't find a connector to fit it to though, the power switch block wont take it. And I'd also like to know if theres any instructions.

Pretty sure I've got it all connected up to my frame nicely but would like to double check, can't test until I get solder tommorow for the chip :(

Yeah I got it now thanks. Thanks for the detailed info though, I'm sure it'll be useful to other muppets like me!

The routing of the sheathed switch wires is a bit of a worry though - they are crammed through the controller hole against the port at the mo... anyone figure out better routing?

why didn't you put thw wires through the metal plate the holes are big enough for the connections to through save's you having them all trapped in the controller ports

All of the wires run through the large oval metal shield hole at the front except the long white switch lead that connects to the chip. For this I couldn't find a better way than jammed against the side of port 1. I don't think it will reach the chip if it went through the same hole as the others. Exactly where do have in mind? Now you have said that I will have another look tonight.

I bunged the long lead that goes to chip in the hole under ports 1&2 (used for clipping the front in)

OK heres a tutorial for fitting the X3CP

1. Get rid of the missus and the dog, clear the table and lay a towel on it

2. Make sure the DVD drive is empty

3. Put the xbox upside down on the table and remove the torx screws

4. Remove the lid, DVD drive and HDD

5. Remove the controller ports. There are 2 screws holding each pair down. Once you have unscrewed these, ease the port upwards and backwards. Be careful not to damage the vertical daughter board behind ports 3 & 4.

6. Take a look at the mating between the front panel and the chassis. The front panel is held in place by vertical tabs running down each side and 3 lesser tabs along the bottom edge of the front panel. Unstick the power/eject adapter if you have it near the centr tab.

7. If you do a search on x-s for remove and "front panel" you will find lots of advice on removing it. Even a 10 sec mpg! Its actually easy but does require a bit more force than might feel comfortable. Pry the side tabs of first. Most suggest using a flat head screwdriver tabs but a screwdriver will damage the plastic so use the end of a spoon instead.

8. Once you have freed the sides of the front panel, push the centre tab down, wiggle the panel and it should come off easily. Just take your time and you shouldn't have any problems at all.

9. You will need to remove the power and eject buttons from the original panel to put them on the CP. Its pretty self explanatory. Just lift the tab with a finger nail to remove the button PCB, bottom end first. Then remove the buttons, silicon carrier and button panel. Fit these parts to the CP in reverse order to their removal.

10. Offer up the CP to the xbox and take a look at the wires. The power/eject (yellow) and the LCD wires and plugs will thread thru the large oval hole in the shielding at the front of the xbox. So will the white lead from the USB adapter.

11. Plug the USB adapter into the back of the CP. Gently ease it into the socket until its snug. Then remove the plug for controller ports 3 and 4 from the mother board. Plug the USB adapter into the motherboard and the controller ports plug into the USB adapter.

NOTE: this is as far as I've had time to do so far!

12. Thread the long white lead towards your chip... I haven't done this satisfactorily yet but cbovis suggested threading it through the hole under ports 1&2 (used for clipping the front in). I will be doing that as soon as I get back from work (soon I hope!)

13. Carefully remove the LCD socket cover on the chip and plug the LCD (black) and switch (white) leads into the chip.

14. Secure the USB adapter, gently click the front panel in place and double check the connections.

15. Reconnect the DVD drive and HDD but leave them loose for now. Plug in your AV, controller and power cable. Fire her up and I *think* you have to enable the LCD in the bios.

16. Adjust the lighting in the room to the way it is most of the time and adjust the contrast of the LCD with the black wheel on the corner of your chip.

17. Power off, put everything back together, roll up, grab a tipple or whatever floats your boat, load up XBMC, put on a phat tune and marvel at what seems to be another great product from Team Xecuter!

I will update this asap but hopefully it will be of some help as is for those who haven't got/fitted their X3CP yet.

In the mean time feel free to point out any omissions, tips or oddities.

Actually... That is why the forums are here, people will make a tutorial and then they will most likely sticky it and/or put in the main page of the web site.

Not that the install was that hard anyway... For some, running the wires might be the most confusing part.

It seems I can't edit my tut so heres a separate update...

1st of all I can confirm that cbovis' suggestion of threading the white switch lead through the hole under ports 1&2 (used for clipping the front in) is a spot on solution. Its easy and not very fiddly at all.

In my case the contrast of the LCD is best when set to maximum.

Although the CP fits reasonably well, I had trouble getting the lid back on the xbox. The process of seating the rim into the front of the lid causes the bottom of the CP to separate a few mm's from the bottom of the xbox. I checked the fitting of the front panel lots of times with the lid removed but nothing appears to be incorrectly fitted - until the lid goes on. This doesn't show under normal circumstances; only when you look at the bottom of the CP from underneath.

I can also confirm that the the XIR receiver fits nicely under the small PCB with the X-LED.
