I've searched the threads for an answer to this problem I'm having, and can't seem to find anything new.

I just bought the X3IR USB Mod and i'm very disappointed in the lack of instructions on how to program the IR mod using USB programmer.
I did find others guides on how to program the IR mod using the 9 pin serial programmer.

My current computer does not have a com port installed, and i really don't want to go to all trouble of installing one as this type of connection is outdated. Plus my X3IR Mod only came with the USB programmer.

I have a 1.6 xbox with the x3ce modchip installed with pinheader and the PCB rebuild, the modchip works perfectly, I have an x3 control panel with lcd. The X3IR Mod is installed and working, With the xbox remote, but i would like to program it to my logitech remote.

This is the error i get when i try to program the IR mod. Unable to retrieve firmware version. I installed the usb driver and com port driver.

Any help would be great on how to program the X3IR Mod using the USB Programmer.

The main difference I found with the USB programmer is that it was only on a different COM port number to my serial once I had its drivers installed.

I have the same problem: HW is awesome, but Why in the Gods name aren't there proper manuals? recent are not clear enough.

? MUST the xbox be turned on at any time?
? So the programmer's switch must be Enabed (blue led lit on?)
? What are the "Force xbox power..." settings in the manager?
? comPort settings goes only to COM9.

Beastmaster, I am in the exact same boat except with a 1.2. I planned on doing a 1.6 also, but why if this IR issue can't be solved. I'll take photos later this week and post...hopefully someone will help?
Exact Step by Step just is not working for me?

you have to follow this steps:unplug power cord , push power button, replace power cord..after that you can read and write..

1. Turn off Xbox.
2. Plug serial lead (9 pin D straight through (1:1) male to female) from PC into X3IR serial socket.
3. Switch X3IR to program enable (Switch down, away from multi connector)
4. Unplug Xbox power lead and press “power on” button to discharge Xbox
5. Plug Xbox power lead back in.
6. Start X3IR settings manager software.
7. Click on settings tab and place a tick next to “X3 IR is installed in Xbox (Self Powered)”.
8. Place a tick next to the COM port you have your PC serial lead connected to. Make sure that the port you select is not in use by another item e.g. modem etc… To check this, open device manager and look in “Ports (COM & LPT), double click on COM1 or COM2, click on “Port Settings” tab, then click the “Advanced” button. Click on the arrow in the drop down box next to “COM port number”. You can select a COM port here, make sure that the port you choose has not got “in use” next to it. You have to select a port in the range of COM1 to COM4.
9. Click “Read Settings” if you get “Unable to retrieve firmware version” This means that X3IR Settings Manager is not able to communicate with the X3IR. Repeat steps 4 & 5. Then click “Read Settings”. Once communicating successfully, the codes previously set in the X3IR will appear in the boxes.
10. To change the codes, click on “Tools” and “Show List Of Codes”.
11. Select the code required from the list, and drag it across to X3IR Settings Manager.
12. Once you are happy with the codes, click on “Write Settings”. If you get “Unable to retrieve firmware version” repeat steps 4 & 5, and click “Write Settings”.
13. If you wish to use a remote control other than the Xbox remote, you can use the learn function of the X3IR. Follow steps 1 to 9, making sure your PC is communicating with the X3IR.
14. Click “Tools” then “Learn Mode”, a window opens up click “Start”
15. Press the button you want to use on the remote, whilst pointing it at the X3IR sensor, a code will appear in the learn mode window. You can continue to press as many buttons as you want to obtain codes for each of the buttons that you wish to use.
16. Once you have all the codes you require, you can copy and paste the codes across to X3IR Settings Manager, then close the “learn mode” window.
17. Click “Write Settings”. If you get “Unable to retrieve firmware version” repeat steps 4 & 5, and click “Write Settings”.
18. Once codes are written successfully to the X3IR, unplug serial lead from X3IR. Switch X3IR switch back to program disable (Up position).
19. Repeat steps 4 & 5, your Xbox should now work with your chosen remote.

Hi and thanks for a partialy helpful guide (above post)
I still try to find out if there is a original firmware on the X3IR programer cause all i get when trying to read settings is "unable to retrieve firmware version"

it would be great if any "admin" from Team-Xecuter could send out a late info/update info about this, since there is still people out here that do use the old xbox.

THX for all great dev's on both consoles
