Xapt3r Install Question - Help

<I have a v1.5 Xbox, this is my first mod, and I am installing the X3 with a Xapt3r adapter>

I have been preparing for the installation for a couple of weeks - reading the forums, and searching the tutorials, however I can't seem to find a Xapt3r install tutorial (all I can find is a Xapter install tutorial).

Has anyone found a Xapt3r install tutorial? The dealer where I purchased the chip just provided a link to this page instead of instructions.

The forums have allowed me to get to the point where the Xapt3r is screwed in, but the D0 wire is not installed. Specifically, I am looking for help with four questions:

1. How to identify the D0 point on the v1.5 motherboard, and what the best technique is to install the Xapt3r wire to it?

2. A picture of how the X3 fits to the Xapt3r (I have heard that people have been putting it on upside down)?

3. An explanation of which lights should be lit on the Xapt3r and the X3 to show a proper installation?

4. An explanation of how to use the little cylinder pins that come with the Xapt3r (are they even required)?

Any help would be appreciated!

Actually, I think you're right - there used to be an xapt3r tutorial somewhere (I know, I've read it) but I can't find it for the life of me anymore.

in any case, the d0 point will be the same in any of the other tutorials, so you can look at the xapter install for the 1.5 box, it should give a pretty decent picture.

you really only have two options with placing the chip. You really shouldn't be able to place it wrong - there's a blocked hole on the corner of the x3 pinheader slot, and there should be a pin missing from that same corner on the xapt3r.

as for which lights should be lit, from what I remember from the tutorial, you place the xapt3r first, power on the box to test it and look for the lights - if they light up, it's positioned properly, then you tighten it down, and drop on the x3. Unfortunately, I don't remember the specifics as to how many lights, or the actual suggested process.

the little cylinder things aren't absolutely necesary, if you want, you can install them into the lpc holes to make the connections a little easier, but they're only really necesary if you're having a lot of problems with alignment.

hope this helps - maybe someone else can find the xapt3r install tutorial and help ya out.

Thanks for your help!

I have come across another question (sorry, but hopefully my questions will help other people who can't find the proper tutorial also):

1. On the X3, is it recommended to insulate that metal prong that comes out from beside the backup rom? I have heard you should insulate it to avoid short-outs, but I'm not sure on the best way to insulate it.

Thanks again -

The d0 point for each version motherboard is exactly the same regardless of the chip. In other words, look at the 1.2-1.5 wires install for a X2.3 chip (here for instance - http://www.teamxecuter.com/x23b_lite_wires.htm) and use that hole.

I'd get some insulating tape and cover the 5v pin. Other than that, if you can use a soldering iron, i'd remove it.

Two last questions, and this should do it... First, should the Xapt3r be completely flush against the motherboard once installed? I notice that I can push mine down and when I release the pressure it 'springs' back. There's about 2mm of give - is this too much - and if so - any recommendation for a flush installation?

Finally, in the package that the X3 came in I found what looks like a thin piece of foam/plastic with double-sided tape on one side. Sorry, I can't describe it any better. Is this to be stuck onto the top of the X3 as a protection layer? If so, when during the process do you stick this on?

I really appreciate everyone's help. It's making the install easier!

the xapt3r should be very flush with the board - to my understanding, almost perfectly flush. If you can tighten it down more without damaging the screw hole, try that. I've never used the xapt3r personally, so I really can't say exactly how much give there should be if any.

Second, the piece of double sided tape is really only for wire installs - so you can mount the chip to the inside of your box somewhere. You don't need it for the xapt3r

Thanks for the info. I will remove the Xapt3r tonight and try again to see if I can get a fully flush install.

Has anyone installing the Xapt3r been able to get a flush install (I have about 2mm-3mm of clearance between the Xapt3r and the motherboard).

Just for any Noobs out there (like me), I found that I could make the Xapt3r more flush with the motherboard by *loosening* the screw. Maybe I had it too tight, and the downwards pressure near the screw forced the opposite side of the Xapt3r upwards.

Anyways, I loosened the screw slightly and the chip became more flush (to about 1mm-2mm from the motherboard). Since then, the blue lights have remained on without any issues.

Hope this helps someone out there...
