Hello,

attempting to stream an avi video over ethernet cable with media player from different sources (pc, asus router) fails with error 80072746. Usb movie playing is fine. Just bought new console already rgh ed, cannot find information on the error code on different forums, apart from some update problems that doesn't seem related to video streaming. can someone point me in a direction to investigate ?

thank you, but I know how to search on google. Moreover, may be i am missing something, but i don't see the point troubleshooting xbox live updates, following microsoft instructions with rgh console ?

May be i was not clear in my question : yes, the error code seems to indicate some update problems. Is this error code coming after unsuccesful attempt to connect to xbox live with rgh ed console when attempting to play media files ?

Assuming this is the case, is there any way to know 1. what update is needed ? then 2. How to install it without xbox live ?

Any indication on how to troubleshoot this appreciated.

If the same movie plays from USB, then it's possibly the streaming mechanism. You've not said what you're using.

Furthermore, this has nothing to do with RGH/JTAG. Moving to the general noob section.

Thank you Martin for your reply,

Just to make sure i understand your answer. error 80072746 on microsoft website : If you’re seeing this message and error code, it means that the update failed to download to your Xbox 360 console.

So when you said this has nothing to do with rgh, does that mean that failing to download update is not related to rgh but to some other problems involving streaming server software ? In other words that it should not ask for an update with error 80072746, rgh or not ?

about server software, yes, i didn't gave too much details on what i tried already, here it is :

i tried : my router, asus rt-66n, reportedly working even if some problems over wifi, that's why i am using ethernet cable. unplayable contents error 80072746 on most files.

for debugging purpose, i also tried (mac os) :

- connect 360 unplayable contents error 80072746 on most files
- ps3 media server (this show sometimes a media update error C00DF236 sometimes the unplayable contents error 80072746)

they both plays some videos, fail on most that should be compatible with xbox 360 video formats, mp4 for example.

- plex media server, works but with horrible quality. Obviously plex is transcoding the video no matter what and the setting are set by the client (but now way to set this from the xbox).

Anyway, that's quite hard to know what is streamed to the xbox with these streaming software as it's unclear if they are transcoding the video when streaming, and what stream output format it is if any. Moreover it seems to be changing depending on the source format (PS3). For example the same movie, on a usb could be playing but when streaming through server software, some transcoding is happening, the format is not the same as original and then for some reason xbox is asking for an update that i can not do.

Looks like at least ps3 media server, and asus software (latest firmware) are widely used and reported working without similar problems. For all these reasons, i m inclined to think something is wrong on the xbox side.

Sorting this issue when you are an XBox noob starting from scratch, is not so trivial, i am a programmer, so i should be able to follow a technical path if only i knew where to start to identify the problem.

So if you can confirm that the exact same media is working fine from USB, the problem is most definitely a streaming issue.

PS3 Media Server can be forced to just report back as XBMC - this option is preferred since there's no transcoding needed. I use this option myself and it works great.

Are you sure you have the optional media update installed?
It's irrelevant here, since he's confirmed the media works from USB. I'm ASSUMING he's talking about the exact same media on both USB and streaming...... If it's different, then yes it's either going to be an OMU issue or codec not supported.

Have you enabled and checked the media streaming settings in win media player?
If you have win 8 you can enable play to in the xbox settings and then just right click the file you want to play and click play to xbox360
