Xbox 360 Open Tray Error After Replacing Laser

A little while back my Xbox 360 phat finally got to the point where it would no longer read discs. After foolishly messing around with it without a multimeter, I was pretty sure I screwed my laser up. So, I sent away for a laser, a multimeter, and a soldering iron on my liteon disc drive. After fixing a problem with the laser arm screw not screwing in tightly enough, I finally got it so my new laser could stay attached to the worm motor. Now, despite a red laser coming up, my Xbox with new laser still will not read discs. I'm pretty sure I soldered correctly as I see the three dots people talk about, and I feel that it should work seeing as though the laser lights up. I took a multimeter reading of the new laser and found that the one on the left (DVD I think?) read about 4.31 whereas the one one the right (CD?) read about .81. At this point, I really don't know what I should do next. Should I try a pot fix on the new laser even though the factory settings sound right? Did I mess something else up when trying to fix the drive? Btw, it is stock disc drive. Haven't modded or flashed anything. If the pot adjustment doesn't help, there's some sort of alignment issue or maybe even a dirty lens.

ETA: Did you re-grease the guide rails for the laser module?

I have not. I should add that I used the screw from one of the clamps to keep laser arm attached to the worm motor. I ended up putting a looser screw back on the clamp and taping it down with scotch, but maybe that's the problem? I wouldn't think so because it seems to be moving on the rails fine, but of course, it doesn't read.

When there is off-axis play in the laser module, there will always be a misalignment issue. A loose mount or missing screw could absolutely cause that to happen. I can't say for sure that what you're experiencing is misalignment, but that's the best guess.

Unless you have CD/DVD drives in them, you won't find screws small enough in a desktop. Maybe a floppy drive. Some old hard drives use little screws in the plastic drive head hardware mount.

NOTE: If you take the cover plate off of a hard drive and you don't have a torque driver, the hard drive will not function again. You MUST replace the cover plate with a torque (NOT torx) driver. Every hard drive mfr has its own specifications for setting the screws. Just an FYI.

Do you mean you removed the anti-static solder ball that's in place for transportation ?

After doing some more investigating, I have a few questions.
1. If my laser shows up red and behaves like it does, does this mean that the new laser is not a problem and that it's good?
2. I noticed that one of the screws holding the clamps up on the bottom had become loose which probably messed up my alignment. Is there a way to know when I get my alignment right?
3. My laser ribbon has a small bend in it (I'll post a pic later, I'm mobile right now). Could this be a reason my laser won't work.
4. Do you think it's even worth it for me to continue trying to fix this myself? I could possibly pay some computer repair place to do it, and of course, I could always just buy another Xbox. I didn't think changing a laser would lead me into so many other problems.

Well, I've thought about that, but that seems difficult in itself, and if I got this screwed up so much, I don't know that I would be more
successful
where are you ? "Request a Service" usually comes up with someone willing to supply a drive and flash the dvd key from your old drive. If you where in the UK i would do it but I assume your based in U.S or somewhere where it isn't 23.23 hrs lol

Haha yes, I've noticed that there's a hefty amount of UK users on here. I am in the US in the Washington DC area. I've been looking into flashing a bit; it doesn't seem too bad. Do you think I shouldn't pursue my laser replacement anymore?

Edit: ended up testing with a CD and a DVD. CD worked find and played, but the DVD couldn't be read. I have no clue what that means but maybe someone here does.

I'd like to thank everyone for helping me out with my problem especially Beaver_Buffcoat. I did play around with my alignment screws and eventually did get them aligned, and now it runs. Once again thanks to everyone for the help!
