I am getting the xbox error 7, which is a hard drive timeout. Can somebody just explain to me what exactly a hdd timeout is? Thanks a lot.

Thanks Martin. Ya, all the cables are good. I can put the original HDD back in and it will boot up fine. The larger HDD that I am having trouble with worked fine for several months, do you have any ideas as to why it would do this all the sudden?

You probably forgot to plug back the power cable or IDE cable back in when you opened your xbox.

If it is not a stock dirve. check your jumper and set it to cs(cable select)

Thanks for the replies. When I put the stock HDD back in it boots just fine. This Western Digital 200GB HDD just stopped working. I've had it installed for several months, and it just stopped working all of the sudden.

You DID have extra airflow on your Xbox, yes?

If not, you've probably killed it. Contact the manufacturer as it should still be under warranty.

Ya, it is under warranty, but I have 150 gigs of videos, tv shows, etc., stuff that will be very difficult to replace. I usually keep the cover off of my xbox to keep the temp down in the 125 degree ferenheit range. Is this a good temperature?

By the way, this is actually the 3rd hard drive that this xbox has fried in the last year and a half. The original is still good though. Does anybody have any idea as to why my xbox would just keep eating hard drives? Thanks a lot guys.

If you take the cover of the Xbox, i would think you actually reduced the airflow inside the box, since fresh cold air is now, not being drawn from the front to the back of the box, but directly from above, which would make the disc and other parts hotter !?!

Keis is correct. you make things hotter by running with the case off.
You should put it back together and use X3 config live to increase the fan speed. You may also want to consider changing the Fan to a 12v rather than the stock (will require a slight HW case mod)

Well the temperatures stay cooler when I have the case off. Can one of you guys play a game for a while then restart your box and tell me what temps you have in ferenheit? Thanks.
