My brother in law has a factory XboX that constantly gives a disk read error loading a game or even in the middle of a game. I've been shopping on ebay and noticed alot of machines being sold with the same problem.

Would a modchip fix this or do you need to replace the drive?

His Xbox should be under warranty, Which a mod chip would void I may add. Why doesn't he take it back and get a new one?

Anyway to answer the question, How could a mod chip possibly fix a defective dvd drive?

Tough crowd. :|

He's thinking about modding it anyway, I guess since the chip allows backups to be recognized I thought maybe the problem could go away by modding it.

only reason it can "recognize" backups is because of the bios hacks. It's not that the dvd drive cant read a backup. its programmed to ignor it, if you will. And you cannot make a hack in a bios to make a dvd drive better at reading discs.

OK, I understand this, however I don't know that the drive is defective. For all I know the problem could be in the "programming" that ignores disks. The machine rejects original games sometimes as it would a backup without the mod.

I agree with what floppy said about getting a better drive by taking it back if the warrenty is not voided. The mod chip also means that you have had the xbox open so could change a drive easily. I surpose.:D Just trying to help

There really is no definate way to tell which one you are going to get either. If you can, buy the latest version possible of the Xbox, because it will most likely include the Samsung. Sometimes you can get lucky and recieve one in an older box.
