if i buy an xbox, get a modchip, install the modchip and a new hard drive, get an xbox live account. will i get banned if i have the mod chip off?
no not unless you log that xbox on live BEFORE you install the new hd and as long as the chip is off your okay

if there's even a chance, then i want to be aware of that.
only if you get on live BEFORE you change out the stock hd with the new one or if you leave your chip on

what's the deal with changing the serial number in the system?
well the idea is if you go on live it reads the serial number and marries it to the eeprom (a chip on the mother board with another code/identity number) so you go on live with your stock hd (or an upgraded one that you first got on live with) now the idea is since it marries the serial number from the hd to the eeprom then if you take the serial number from the old hd and replace the new hd's serial number with the one from the old drive then you wont get banned because when live scans they wont pickup a drive change

anybody know of how we could do something like this?
the only way i could think of to do this is to hack the old hard drive in some way

As far as I know, you'll be fine. I bought my box, modded it, signed up, and have been on since Nov 9th without a hitch. (knock on wood) Good luck!

If you ever click on the Xbox Live tab under the MS dash, that counts as signing into live. By clicking on the Live tab, you establish a connection with Live and that is when they gather your EEPROM and HDD info. So if your friend ever went to network setup or something like that just to test to see if he could sign into Live before purchasing a gamertag, that still counted and just gave MS his EEPROM and HDD info without you having a gamertag yet.

unless you never hooked up to your network and the xbox wasn't able to contact XBL servers...

this topic is gettin old... MS has stated in their EULA that they don't like us f**kin with the xbox, so you deserve to be banned for f**kin with it. if you want a chipped xbox that's just wonderful... it's your own fault if you get banned from XBL. if you want a chipped xbox AND play live, get another xbox, you can get a decent refurb for $139 usd... not too bad a price to pay seeing what you can do with a chipped xbox.... I chose to chip my box, i don't worry about xbox live due to the fact they install trojans on your xbox to spy on you... and i prefer to use xbox connect, and especially xlink kai. ooooh kai is nice. now that avalaunch and XBMC has it integrated, i have no trouble finding a match to play. every night i find a good match to play. and 90% of the matches are virtually LAG FREE! hmmm and as soon as i get the cash, i'll be replacing my router with the one compatible with xlink's new router firmware, so i'll never have to f**k with it on my PC again!! yay for homebrew!!!

just my opinion and venting on the subject, cry if you like, i dont give a poop.

If you NEVER plan on playing on live, you should be good. But it is still a good idea.
