Xbox Live, can't connect

yes, but if you had a regular xbox, then moved an account to a modded one, M$ will notice a change in hardware and ban you (since it was on one xbox before, and a modded one next), bad idea, it will ban you and your mod box form ever returning to live unles the EEprom is edited, which also is a hard process, save time (not sure about money :() and do my process above with building one, might as well

MS does not see that as a change in hardware. I log on with my XBL account on multiple (modded and unmodded) xboxes all the time. the MS Servers record the hardware, the first time the box connects to live (Xbox SerialNumber/UniqueHDDKey/HDD Serial Number). If one of those values changes on that one piece of hardware, the xbox is banned. (there is a thread on xbox-scene that states only the UniqueHDD key is actually banned).

You don't need a memory card though it makes the process a whole lot easier.
You can do an account recovery on any xbox.

Then you will get banned, if you have different HD then one you signed you with for live. put drive in then get NEW live account.
