What sort of network layout do you have? Is there a router that is issuing the DHCP addresses? What IP does your Linux machine have and what IP does your Xbox have? How are you trying to connect (probably "access" is the better term) the PC from the Xbox? Are you referring to an FTP connection from Linux to Xbox, or a Linux file share that is then accessed by XBMC or similar?

Trying to connect using a router, xbox ip is dhcp ( 10.0.0.3) router dhcp(10.0.0.138)
pc is dhcp ( 10.0.0.2)
the ftp programme (kbear) wont functon and i've no idea how to set up a linux share

all works fine under windows, nothing under linux (suse 10)

Drop down to a more basic level first. Can you ping your Xbox from the Linux PC? If this is successful try a different FTP client. You can even use a browser, by means of a URL like ftp://xboxIP. I used to like the client ncftp when working from a console screen.

Once you get this first problem taken care of you can look into the shares. You'll probably want (need?) to use Samba to create SMB shares. I assume you're running KDE based on use of the kbear app, the only graphical access for Samba at the time I was running it was the "swat" (Samba web access tool?) service accessible through a browser window. These SMB shares are equivalent to the file shares created in Windows. While I'm not currently running Linux on anything I do have shares set up on one of my Windows servers. Works well for streaming media to XBMC.

thanx for the replies
kde based
no success with the ping ( connecton refused) , although my net access is fine
dhcp is enabled all , addresses seem fine

Is their any advantages in running linux or should i just put up with windows ?
i use my pc ( grabbing movies and documentaries from usenet and torrents) and xbox mainly for playing these files from pc and streaming democracy now ( that still works no problems streaming straight from net to xbox via router)
Still to sort out a media player for linux that will play all my divx & mp4 files, thats the next task

thanx again
