GENERAL Xbox update problem

Hi could someone please help me update my friends xbox?

I have put the drive back to stock before trying to update the dashboard from usb, but the problem is he is away for 4 weeks and forgot to leave the HDD and my daughter wants to go on it while he is away and it says there is not enough room on the hdd as there is no hdd attached is it possible to do it any other way?

Could i use my hdd to do it or will i need to get another?

even easier, just put a USB stick into the console and configure space on there for it.
