Alright folks, first of all, if this isn't in the correct area, i'm extremely sorry, its the closest topic i could find. And i'd also like to thank you in advance for your help. I just got a brand new xbox, the manufactur date is november of this year 04. It says on the box, v1.8a, which i'm assuming that is the version, but other than that, i can't tell. The only reason i'm wondering is because i want to chip it, but i don't know if there are bois/even chips that will work with it. Does anyone know if that is the version or what the correct version would most likely be, and if there is any way of modding it yet(and if there isn't, an estimated time of that possibiliyt. thanx

Yup should work just dandy. I would say give it a few days tho just incase u got one of the first new xbox versions that havent been "discovered" yet.

so where did it say your xbox was a version 1.8a? Check www.xbox-scene and at the top theres a tab that reads something like "xb-versions" and then there is some stuff you can try there but im not sure if its updated for newer consoles. I dont think microsoft gives them version numbers like that and why would they tell you what version it was anyway.

yea dude, you're probobly right, its my first xbox and it didn't make sense to me either, i just saw it on the box above the stores barcode(not the actual stores label) and it said v1.8a, so i figured the label was close to previous versions of xboxs so w.e. i haven't had a chance to actually open it up, i need to get the tool to do it correctly, and it's only been 2 days, so i don't exactly feel like voiding the warrenty untill i'm sure it works correctly before i chip it. thanx for your post though

one more quick question for everyone. My brother just receantly bought an xbox too, but i think it is a v1.6 instead of the v1.6b(his was made in august of this year and i believe it has the samsung drive). but heres my question. If i happened to do some mid-night switching lol, which xbox would in your opinion be more up to the job of running games and basically RUNNING after i chip it?

oh so u plan 2 be a sneaky f**ker, ahwell his problem, but it's all the same, only real diff is Drives, if his Drive is a 605B it's a Good Drive, tho if it's the 605F, then it's real sh*tty, so becareful cause the only way 2 tell is by opening the system, and ah screw it, if u wanna rip som1 off figure the rest out on ur own

lol...well in lamence terms, yea.......he wouldn't really care anyway, he isn't planning to chip his, all of his games should work either way. I'm not that much of a heartless b******d to do somthing that would screw him over more than myself. But is there no real way to tell which type of samsung drive is in the v1.6s without opening it?

The only way to know what drive you have is by opening the case and looking. I have a 1.6 board but it came with a Phillips drive. M$ would've simply used whatever drive they had on hand. The only brand of drive that has gone by the wayside was the Thompson drive.

There was an article on how to tell which drive you had by the hole shape in the tray, its somewhere on xbox scene, have a look in the tut's.

Ok first of all, i would like to thank everyone who has helped me so far. I had one last questions for all of you geniuses of the xbox world. I have pretty much narrowed my november 2004 xbox to be a v1.6b with a phillips drive. I know it depends on which samsung drive, but over all, which drive, samsung or phillips is more dependable and has the most ease of playing backups and cd-r's and ect. basically, which one would be better off after have bin chipped?(or is the one samsung actually worse than the phillips) thank you for your time
