Hi Everyone,

I have an xbox slim and a phat one. Both have lt2.0 on them and when i tried to play avi files from a usb it said i needed an update and need to connect to xbox live.

Once i connected to xboxlive it told me that i needed to update my dashboard in order to sign in xbox live.

my question is if i do run the dashboard update, will i still be able to play back ups of my games???

thanks for your time.

Nice first post. Read around a bit and you will find every answer to your questions. Flash back to stock, Update your dash, then reburn on the necessary games and you will be on your way.

By the way, once you update your dash, you can play your avi's without being connected to live.

Not true. Once you download the optional media update, you will be able to use the first xbox offline to play avi files. The other will need to be connected to live. This is because the update is signed to both the profile and xbox. If it isn't signed to your xbox you can't use it offline.

Thanks for the replies.
@jlc2787- forgot to mention that i cannot go back to stock as i didnt flash the xboxs myself.

@
joesinger47- thanks for the update. do the phat one needs to be signed in while playing avis?

just to be clear, there is no way i can just update the dashboard (without flashing back to stock) and continue to play the back up games?

This is for ANYONE who needs to sign into XBL before you can play AVIs:

The problem is that the Optional Media Update comes in many flavours. If you've downloaded it previously (prior to DIVX support for example), the latest update will be signed only to your GT.

What to do:

Create a NEW XBL account on the console you want to watch AVIs on. It can be a new email address etc. It doesn't matter as it's going to be a throw-away GT. Select 'free' of course.

While signed in on your new XBL account, play an AVI. It'll ask you to install Optional Media Update. Accept and after downloaded, the AVI should play.

That should be it. You should be able to sign out of XBL (and indeed the new GT) and AVIs should still play, negating the need to ever connect again just to watch a movie. The newly downloaded item (as per DLC rules) is now primarily signed to the console.

You can also use the content license transfer tool on xbox.com. If you wish to change your "primary" xbox and be able to play files offline

Content transfer tool is an all or nothing job. It will combine multiple consoles into one, which makes it pointless (or even useless) for this task.

Right, which is why I mentioned switching your primary xbox ;)
So your solution to enable AVI playback on a specific console without being on XBL is to transfer ALL content from ALL other consoles you have registered to the console in question.

What if you want to keep some content locked to another console without being signed in, but still use XBL?

It's a needless, pointless exercise which has no thought behind it whatsoever. Overkill in every sense of the word.
