i was looking at the xecuter 3 on a page to buy one( looking for a friend, already got one) and what does the "protect" and "unprotect" mean

That's the on-chip Flash Protection. If you use any of the external switches, it's best to leave the on-chip protection off so you can do this function on the external switch.
