Just did my first all went well except for switch would'nt lay flat..

If your new to soldering and cutting PCB be patient research and use a magnifying glass to check your work. Use small amount of flux and or pre tin your solder points.

Thanks all!!

Re: Xecuter LT Switch - Installation *UPDATED 1/27/2010*

the switch is such a precise fit that when it fits around the powerplug and its a snug fit the chip is slightly lifted depending on how you seat it but it is a very very minor thing as long as you of course simply hold down the chip whilst you do the first solder its nothing at all to be worried about

Re: Xecuter LT Switch - Installation *UPDATED 1/27/2010*

I currently do not have access to a scratch pen.

I was wondering if I could use a dremel with a diamond point tip or fine tip attachment to clean up the solder points on the drive board?

I want to get clean and easy solder points and I was just trying to make the process move a little faster.
I would already have my dremel out for the trace cuts, so... just wondering is all?

Thanks!

Just use an Exacto knife/craft knife. If you go to hobbyist shops they should have fiberglass burnishing brushes. Its not necessary but makes the job much easier. Try not to expose anything else besides the pads. It increases the chances of shorts.

If you have a pencil laying around (with an eraser tip), you could always glue some sandpaper to the eraser tip. 600+ grit should work well but work slow.

What i usually do is drag the tip of the exacto knife across the pad diagonally untill I can see the shiny copper pad. Change directions when you reach the other end. Do it horizontally, then vertically etc etc. and finish off with a fiberglass burnishing brush. Cut traces using a dremel and engraving tip (0.8mm), Flux and add solder to the pads. Clean flux off with isoproply alcohol pads. Do the same for the LT Switch. 100% perfect every time.

Hi Jock

Are you in the UK per chance? I've successfully done only one of these and I know it's because of bad solder joints to the pads. I have a Stanley knife and a dremel, cutting the traces is no problem but I'm looking for a suitable fiberglass burnishing brush to prepare the pads. Do you know of a store in the UK I can order one from please? Or can you point me to one I can get off Ebay maybe, I haven't a clue what these things are and I guess I need the smallest one going.

Cheers

This was very helpful, JOCKz.
Do you happen to have a pic that size with the cuts so I can see how far you go on each one?

Thanks!

And if you do not have time, I completely understand.
I just wanted to get an eye for what it looks like.

Did you not read the tutorial m8 ?

There are links to all the products including the fibre glass scratch pen - we now make them ourselves - the link given is a UK seller

Recommended Parts:

Xecuter CK3 Pro (Rev D): Buy Here
Xecuter LT Switch: Buy Here
Soldering Iron: Anything from 15w to 30w with a very fine tip (Perfect for beginners. Anything hotter / heavier and you risk damaging the PCB unless you are experienced) - Weller is a recommended brand.
Solder: 0.6mm lead free solder
Xacto Style Knives for cutting traces: Buy Here
Fiberglass Scratch Pen for cleaning the PCB solder points: Buy Here

I bought mine from a online hobby store in the UK. Couldnt find an aussie supplier that stocked 2mm burnishing brushes. Modelcraft seem to be a UK based company so you might find it cheaper by googling (pretty sure iv seen them at 4 pound). This is were i bought mine.

Bad soldering joints are because of dry/cold solder, dirty solder and in this case bad connection. Make sure you clean the pads properly !!! The other 2 reasons are easily preventable by cleaning your soldering iron tips. I found a nice video on the basics of soldering for you guys.

Sorry mate all the Lite-on's i've modded have been returned. I have 2 sitting here but cant be bothered pulling them apart. I should be getting a few more next week so i'll post more pics. Have a look on Boxxdr's site, it should give you a pretty good idea.

only sure way to tell is with a multimeter. don't just rely on visual cues

well that would be correct if your work was a total mess.

you can very easily tell visually if the cut is good if you do a clean job. I really don't know how you cant do it cleanly unless you use a butchers knife :)

Re: Xecuter LT Switch - Installation *UPDATED 1/27/2010*

just thought id add this info here. It was sent to another member via PM and i thought it'd be useful for the onlookers -

This is one to keep in mind "3 seconds max". It the number one rule of soldering, never leave the soldering iron on anything (pads/pins etc) for more than 3 seconds. If you cant do it in this short time frame; move along to the next one and let it cool down. And flux is corrosive and conductive so make sure you clean it off !!!
