No, not for writing xell but if you wanted xell to boot then yes you need the jtag part installed.

check to see if it is still exploitable (Yes 1903).
Installed jtag with diodes and jumper.
Wrote xell to nand.
Turn on box e79
Write good bin back everything ok
I have read and read. Resoldered and checked continuity
Looks like all is good

I am doing something wrong but I don't know what it is

Post pictures of your install and soldering, are you using QSB or just wires and diodes? If using QSB did you change the switch position from off? If using diodes check if they are facing the right direction and that you also installed the jumper wire.

hmm. I'm in the process of doing a Xenon board myself.

Are you absolutely sure the diodes are facing the right way?

Did you bridge the UT61 or UT62 on the bottom of the board? I only ask because I accidentally bridged all 3 pads and, as you could imagine, had an unexplained RROD.

Just tryin' to give you a couple ideas...

the black band on the diode goes tword j1f1. is this correct
That is correct, and the diodes are soldered to the J1F1, using the two middle holes.

Also, double check that the diodes are connected to the correct place on the J2D2.
