XLCD problems

Hey guys!

Just got my new X3 w/ XLCD for Christmas, and the chip is fantastic!

I also used a dremmel and cut a hole for the XLCD as well. Mine looks pretty much like a few of the other pictures that have been posted here.

The chip itself, like I said, is working fine. The trouble is this XLCD -- I can't get it to display anything. Initially I couldn't get it to even light up, but switching the direction of the cable solved that problem. Now it lights up nice, and it will respond to brightness controls in both the X3 OS and XBMC. But it just won't display anything!

Occasionally, the display shows a few random dashes that seem to blink in and out at random (usually while I play a movie in XBMC -- I have no idea what it's supposed to say there, so I won't hazard a guess as to what it's trying to do).

My gut reaction is that maybe I have a bad cable. But I thought I'd check here first -- maybe this is a common problem? I don't see many XLCD support requests here.

I'm using a 1.6b XBox and the latest revision of the Bios (1936 was it?) if that's any help.

Thanks in advance!

have you tried checking the connector on the chip and on the XLCD. when I bought mine i found that the pins on the XLCD socket were bent and this caused it to display nothing.

hope this helps

Mmm, nope. That was actually one of the first things I checked, since I had a problem with one of the other connections like that. The XLCD connectors are all clean and straight, even by the most anal-retentive of standards.

Thanks anyway.

is there such a thing as x3 1959_16.

i thought that the regular 1959 bios worked on 1.6 xboxes. I am using the x3 1959 bios on a 1.6b and it works fine :)

i have x3 1959 and enable it on but only brightness have visual effect on lcd but the contrast wheel have no effect. I have just a light lcd for read my book before sleep but it display nothing on the lcd.
Maybe is the x3 chip but i can't send back it. I have no choose to try to make it work or trash it.
Someone can test the contrast wheel and post valor open and close here i will chech if my contrast wheel is not dead

always with a pin header, i've tried the wire install before on a 2.6 and had problems with it.

it shouldnt really make a difference which install you choose because they are both 'supposed' to work. so theoretically the lcd should work with the wire install

Ok, well hopefully this will answer some Q's ...

I've just bought my XLCD and fitted it perfectly -

You just plug it in, enable it the X3 bios, adjust the brightness up most of the way in BIOS, then turn the wheel on the X3 to full - check it's the right way as at the wrong 'end' it will look like it's off.

There are a total of three pins missing on the 1.6 versions as they dont need the extra 5 volt pin.

Nothing else should need to be done.

my box is 1.4 but i use wire install. If the lost pin on wire adapter are needed for x3 lcd i need to find an xbox with pin header installed for testing

So far as I'm aware, any xbox up to 1.5 should have 2 pins 'missing' from the installation, be it pin header or wire. So these are not required.

Does the LCD light up at all ?

ok, I don't think it is a problem with the install. But you can try it on a pin header if you want. Jonrees69 is right, there should be two pins missing on the pin header, the wire install only replaces the pins you need to make the chip work. the rest of the pins on the pin header are only used for extra support. So if you are confused why there arn't wires for some holes where there are pins on the pin header, dont be, it is meant to be like that.

i hope that makes sense, sorry if it doesnt
