Yes, it works PORTABLE with a USB Flash Drive,

After spending a day backing up my HDD to reformat it in exFat I thought I would mess around with a USB stick to see what would happen, you can get much smaller adapters and USB drives than what I was using, so portability with a USB flash drive is a serious option, just thought I would share my findings.
(Yes I formatted the drive to exFat)

Do you have to boot with the the dongle and than use the flash drive?

yeah im happy that my card reader works, because with that way i will do any updates, and the primary microSd is only for homebrew & Games .

Just confirm that i need to purchase a USB C to USB A (female) OTG adaptor to allow me to plug a pen drive into my switch? (undocked)
