I was an early adopter of the 360 and after many happy months of using my "patched Firmware" MS25 it finally went "tits up" with the 3RLOD.
As a person who knows a bit about electronics I questioned the validity of the heat gun or towel methods and decided they were not for me.
So I decided to bite the bullet, reflashed back to the original firmware and called Mr Microsoft. Even though the xbox was well outside of its warranty period and the warranty sticker was knackered, to say the least, they agreed to have a look at my £300 paperweight.
They emailed me a label and UPS came and took the 360 away.
After two weeks a parcel turned up at my front door. Inside was my beloved Xbox. Accompanying it was a letter explaining the motherboard had died and had been replaced. There was a 1 month free XBL card to compensate for the time the xbox was away (even though I used XBL with my other 360).
I laughed out loud. I had beaten Microsoft. Hoorah to the man in the street.
HOWEVER.....
I noticed a clear plastic cover over the chrome finished DVD cover. Why had they done that. I was pretty sure there was nothing wrong with the DVD drive I had sent back so surely they wouldn't have replaced it, would they?
My happy mood soon diminshed when my cracked open and repaired xbox revealed a brand-new Hitachi 0079FK drive staring back at me.
Bollocks
Guess they're not that dumb after all.
Oh well, You've gotta laugh I suppose.
