Zephyr console always booting into Xell

I have a JTAGed Zephyr console and almost every time I turn it on, the center green light starts flashing and it then boots into Xell.

I have tried many things to fix this, but nothing completely gets rid of the problem.

I am using Coolshrimp's Jtag Tool V3.00. I have destroyed the top DB1F1 point and the alternate point FT1U2 on the bottom of the motherboard. There are still other alternate points I can use, messing up these two points shouldn't cause problems, should it?

So far, I have tried many combinations of the following to no avail:
  • Changed dash version from 12625 to 12611
  • Changed the DVD Drive? option from Yes to No
  • Changed the SMC points from Aud_Clamp & DVD_Tray to Original (and yes, I did rewire it correctly afterwards)
  • Changed JTAG wiring from standard (two diodes with direct bridge and with 100 Ohm resistor) to Blackaddr transistor wiring

The console only boots when using the Aud_Clamp & DVD_Tray points (it boots into Xell) or when I flash it with the original NAND (acts like a normal Xbox). All other times it would give me E79 (1033).

What can be causing this?

Thank you.

Yes, the DVD drive is installed.
When I power on the console, the DVD drive will eject. If I close the tray right away it will boot into the dash and not into Xell. The DVD drive is connected and it works properly.

I'm not sure why I get E79 unless I specifically use the Aud_Clamp and DVD_Tray points... otherwise I wouldn't use the DVD_Tray point as it's giving me problems right now.

Hook up another DvD drive to it and see if it's the drive?
Thanks for the suggestion. I just tried different DVD drives, SATA cables and DVD drive power cables with no success.

Please take a look at this post, as I had the same problem.

Thank you. I have actually read through your post before making mine.

This is where I am at now: I have dash 12611, DVD Drive set to Yes, and freeBOOT eject set to Xellous. It's still ejecting the DVD drive.

Is there anything else I could do? Is there an easy way to repair the DB1F1 alternate point (FT1U2) on the bottom of the motherboard?

How about you make an image with the same configuration as above but with DVD Drive option set to NO.

Thanks for your suggestion, but I have already tried this and it does not work for me. The best I can get is 4-5 boots in a row (if I'm really lucky) without it ejecting the tray.

ok, I actually have a friend that sent off for a jtag unit that does this too.....he has to boot his by pressing the eject button twice to boot it and HOPE it skips the xell screen.

I contacted the guy that made the jtag and asked him why he did it that way and this is what he told me:
"he had a destroyed trace in which i had to use the open tray connection to make it work. this does cause it to eject. he could remove the drive and reflash it with the no dvd option using jtag tool he will need to set it up for both aud_clamp and open tray as well as use the no dvd option."

If you have read M AzeeM K's post, you'll see that the DVD tray will eject even with the dvd option set to no. But you will avoid getting e79 error or running into Xell.

Use the DVD_Clamp mod and dvd option set to "NO" and make a new freeboot flash.

I had this same problem and still do. With mine when it boots the tray opens. I just wait untill it gives the xbox logo and then press the eject button twice to close the drive. All works fine. If I am standing there and I turn it on and the drive ejects and I close it right away it will go to xell. I also tried the No dvd option and still got the same affect. If you can just wait it out and leave the drive open see if it starts to boot before closeing the drive.

Thank you everyone for your help! :D

I read through your post, "Zephyr and HDMI", and most of M AzeeM K's Alternate JTAG SMC/Points Tutorial but didn't see that, so thanks for pointing it out.

I tried to fix the lifted pad and trace at point FT1U2 on the bottom of the motherboard, but it did not work. I scraped back the green coating and PCB until I could solder a wire connecting the point to the trace. I also tried conductive glue. I examined it under a magnifying glass and a high resolution image. It looked good, but it still did not work. Is there some way to fix this so I don't need to use the DVD_Tray point?

Thanks.

When I first did the regular JTAG'ing the box was out of control. The dash was unstable, sometimes I got E79, other times it wouldn't even boot at all. And the most annoying thing of all, was that it 90% of the time booted Xell.

The DVD_Clamp is actually the easiest way to jtag a box. I will do this method on all boxes from now on (exept the xenon boards). The Eject tray is something I can live with. :)

A BIG thx to M AzeeM K for this alternative JTAG method.

Like King Nasty said, the Alternate method is the easiest one you can use to Jtag an Xbox360 which is not Xenon. Ofcourse there is the DVD Tray opening flaw which leads to booting into XeLL on Zephyr consoles, but that can be easily fixed by using the NO DVD option. How come it is not working for you when it works for everyone else?
